This class focuses on how issues of gender and sexuality have been addressed by pre-modern medicine on a global scale. It addresses medical notions of gendered bodies and their changes throughout history, taking into consideration a variety of cultural traditions. It also explores the presence of women in the medical arts, in their different roles of patients, objects of investigation on the part of male doctors, caretakers, and unrecognized practitioners of medicine until their final recognition as legitimate interlocutors for male scientists. This course is the same as GGS 323 and repeat rules may apply.
