The main objective of the course is to develop the skill of small-ensemble, which includes: the development of creative problem-solving skills within a chamber ensemble for vocalists; the ability to develop concert repertoire in an environment that is led primarily by individual singers; and the exploration of early music and one-on-a-part repertoire. As they develop these skills, students will experience singing in groups of various sizes from trios to octetsâ that foster a high level of musical independence, accountability, and ensemble understanding. Furthermore, students will develop an understanding of the performance practice of early music (including vocal techniques appropriate to the style of early music and a cappella singing), and the skills necessary to situate performance within appropriate historical and social contexts.
