This 6-week course is for Upward Bound BRIDGE students, only. It cannot be used as an equivalency or substitute for SOC 100DIS or SOC 101 or count towards any major program requirements as this is an elective course, only. This course is also a distance learning course with additional office hours. Our own learning and education is dependent on what we know about our world in relation to how we create our own identity-in-action (which is an ongoing process) within one of the largest systems known to us: the educational system. This course will examine human identity as it relates to the following core questions based on the institution and systems of formal education: Who are we, individually? How do we fit into educational systems? How do we contribute to these systems? How does a system collectively view each one of us? How do others influence or impact us to act in an individual or societal manner (both within and outside of systems)? How do we exert our own individual agency within an educational system? How do we create our own individual identity within system-driven identities that are already established? What do we give up while interacting within an educational system? How does a system help us or protect us?
