This course traces the origins of present-days issues concerning women, gender, and masculinity by investigating the roles that women could have in pre-modern societies. Through an investigation of both primary and secondary sources, this course will highlight point out both the limits imposed onto women and the spaces for influence and authority that women could carve for themselves. The course will take into account different disciplinary area, from literature to the visual arts, to medicine and science. It will also include an analysis of how questions of gender intersected with questions of religion and of race. This course is the same as GGS 452LEC, and course repeat rules will apply. Students should consult with their major department regarding any restrictions on their degree requirements.
