HMN 304 teaches students strategies and tools for creating effective Digital Communications in areas spanning a range of fields or specializations such as Professional and Technical Writing, Digital Rhetoric, and Journalism, among others. Faculty drawn from these areas will lead students through hands on exercises and class discussions that will allow them to explore the special affordances of various genres and media, from, for a couple examples, digital journalism destined for a campus publication to Technical Documentation that will be published to a digital humanities project site. Students will also learn through discussing and critiquing examples from given fields selected by the instructor to demonstrate different facets of digital communications as they relate to digital humanities research. This workshop will require preparatory reading, in-class participation, independent research, and the submission of a workshop assignment and reflection as part of each student’s submitted final digital portfolio. Open lab hours following the workshops will offer students additional support in completing their assignments, reflections, and portfolios. HMN 30X workshops are designed as basic or introductory and require no previous skills or knowledge. Students must have passed HMN 201 with a grade of C or higher prior to enrolling in this course.
