HIN 111 is the first course in a two-course sequence which introduces Hindi and Urdu to students with either no or very limited exposure to Hindi, Urdu, or related South Asian languages. Students are introduced to Hindi as both a spoken and written language with an emphasis on how to use the language in everyday settings. Class meetings include explanations of grammar and vocabulary, grammar and vocabulary-based drills, reading activities, individual and small group activities, and small group-based projects with presentations. Through this variety of activities, students are introduced to aspects of the target language, are familiarized with those introduced aspects of the target language through drills and exercises, and are enabled to begin producing statements within the target language. In addition to developing a basic competency in spoken and written Hindi students will also be introduced to the cultures of India and Pakistan where Hindi and Urdu are most spoken.
