Laboratory 1 is structured to provide the foundation of skills and tools needed to design and execute experiments. The course begins with a review of laboratory safety, statistics and probability, the role of experiments in engineering practice, and technical communication genres. Students then engage in five structured labs designed to provide exposure to different laboratory equipment, types of data, and the analysis of experimental data. Review of relevant subject matter is provided within the lecture component of the course. The course concludes with the design of an experimental study informed by published research. Students present the results from these experiences via various forms of oral and written communication.
