This course introduces students to the history, development, and contemporary management of cities, focusing on a comparison of two world cities: Paris and New York City. Students explore these cities through several media: readings, video blogs, documentaries, feature films, interactive urban simulation games, and first-person urban exploration games. The course covers these topic areas: the creation and growth of cities over time, urban form, housing, transportation systems, climate adaptation, water management, and the realistic and idealized urban imaginaries that guide urban development.
