From the 15 th to 19 th centuries the Americas were a simmering cauldron of cultures in contact, conflict and on the move. The subdiscipline of historical archaeology can transform our understanding of North American and Caribbean societies during the colonial period - during a time of global trade on the high seas, vast movements of people in diaspora, and the rise of capitalism. Combining archaeological research with the written record allows us to “flip the focus” and share the often hidden stories of people who were left out or erased from history.
